O Festival de Cinema de Sundance de 2021 acontecerá digitalmente por meio de uma plataforma online de 28 de janeiro a 3 de fevereiro de 2021. Além disso, os participantes do festival podem se reunir em salas de espera virtuais, participar de perguntas e respostas ao vivo e reunir-se em ambientes online.
“A união tem sido um princípio animador aqui no Sundance Institute, pois trabalhamos para reimaginar o Festival para 2021, porque não há Sundance sem nossa comunidade”, disse o fundador e presidente do Sundance Institute, Robert Redford. “Sob a liderança de Tabitha, criamos uma nova visão coletiva: uma que honra o espírito e a tradição desses revigorantes encontros anuais em Utah, enquanto abre espaço para novas possibilidades imaginativas em um novo formato online.” A lista completa de 2021 inclui 72 longas-metragens, representando 29 países e 38 cineastas estreantes. 14 filmes e projetos anunciados hoje foram apoiados pelo Instituto Sundance em desenvolvimento, através de bolsa direta ou Labs de residência. 66 dos longas-metragens do Festival, ou 92% da programação anunciada hoje, terão estreias mundiais. Esses filmes foram selecionados entre 14.092 inscritos, incluindo 3.500 longas-metragens. Das inscrições de longas-metragens, 1.377 foram dos Estados Unidos e 2.132 foram internacionais. Vale lembrar que nos últimos anos foi aqui em Sundance onde começou a história de alguns grandes filmes da temporada de premiações, como "Whiplash", "Me Chame Pelo Seu Nome", "Manchester à Beira-Mar", "Capitão Fantástico" e "The Farewell".
